Hi, I’m Ryan McPhaill
I've taught drums and percussion in Portland, Oregon, since 1995. I'm a lifelong Portland-area resident, and I've worked with musicians and bands here since I was a teenager.
I first started playing drums at age 8, and over the course of my career I've taught hundreds of students of all ages and skill levels. My lessons are tailored to each student’s unique needs, emphasizing technique, independence, reading, transcription, preparation, and — above all — confidence. I always welcome beginners, and I offer a complimentary first lesson to anyone curious about getting started.
I earned a BA in psychology and philosophy (double major) from Portland State University, where I also studied music performance with well-known musicians including Alan Jones and Darrell Grant. I've been influenced by drummers such as Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Tim Alexander, and John Bonham.
I currently maintain teaching studios at Rhythm Traders and Portland Music Company's NE Broadway location, and since 2020 I've also developed an accessible remote-lesson format for distance learning, along with hybrid options for students who want a mix of both.
Outside the studio, I stay active as a performing and recording drummer. I currently play with Portland bands Sleepless (progressive metal), The Tumblers (country), and Golden Skeletons (punk/new wave), and I've recorded and performed with numerous other acts over the years, including recent projects with Jerry A and the Neo Girls and Alpha Destroyer.
